What Is a Doula?
A doula "makes birth better" by helping the pregnant mom and her husband/partner navigate through the birth process in a similar way that a tour guide helps people navigate a trip to an unknown land.
A birth doula provides non-medical support to women, their husbands/partners, and families during pregnancy, labor, and birth. She teaches them what to expect during labor and birth, showing them how to successfully work with the contractions together as a team, rather than fighting against them. She suggests different positions in which the pregnant woman can labor, utilizing a variety of comfort measures when needed, helping mom stay hydrated, and doing anything else to assist during the labor. She can also show mom how to successfully breastfeed following the birth, helping the newborn baby to latch on successfully.
